Ask any local: there is nothing quite like listening to your favorite musician perform while the sun sets over the Cascade Mountains and the Deschutes River rushes at your feet. Bend’s very own Les Schwab Amphitheater hosts an amazing summer concert series that allows both locals and visitors to do exactly that. Since its first season in 2002, some of the biggest names in music have played at the Les Schwab Amphitheater. The Amphitheater has hosted iconic, world-renowned performers like Willie Nelson, Ringo Starr, Merle Haggard, and Bob Dylan as well as many popular contemporary artists like The National, Beck, The Shins, and Death Cab for Cutie. The Amphitheater also puts on many beer-themed events throughout the summer season, including the Fermentation Celebration, a beer walk through the Old Mill District, on June 8th and the Bend Brewfest in August.

The Amphitheater is located in the Old Mill District, where you can grab a bite or do a little shopping before a show. 1. John Mellencamp – Sunday, June 11

John Mellencamp’s catchy brand of heartland rock has made him a beloved, chart-topping presence on the American music scene for well over 30 years. A winner of 13 Grammy’s, Mellencamp sings simple, plainspoken songs about the often forgotten struggles of everyday people. With such memorable hits as “Hurts So Good,” “Jack and Diane,” and “R.O.C.K in the USA,” Mellencamp’s show promises the opportunity to sing along to radio classics while also hearing songs from his new album Sad Clowns and Hillbillies. Jewel and Carlene Carter open his show, making it an all around stellar evening.

2. Pink Martini – Friday, June 30

Pink Martini calls Portland home, but they will be making their want to Bend this summer to promote their ninth studio album Je dis oui!  Pink Martini’s multilingual symphonies fuse a diverse range of musical styles, instruments, and talented vocalists to create a lively, inimitable sound. Their trademark blend of jazz, classical, Latin, and pop truly defies categorization and offers up enough variety to suite all musical tastes.

3. Avett Brothers – Friday, July 21

In recent years, The Avett Brothers’ simple melodies and honest, heartfelt lyrics have made them a staple of the folk-rock resurgence. Brothers Scott and Seth Avett started the band in their hometown of Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, striving to blend folk, bluegrass, country, and rock into an updated form of roots music. The Les Schwab Amphitheater is the perfect setting for their down-to-earth, uplifting tunes.

4. Steve Miller Band with Peter Frampton – Friday, August 4

Steve Miller’s classic blues-rock has been a radio mainstay for over 40 years. Started in San Francisco in the ‘60s, the Steve Miller Band has evolved from groovy acid rock to produce such popular hits as “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” and “Jet Airliner.” Guitar virtuoso Peter Frampton will join the Steve Miller Band, making this the perfect night for any 1970s rock devotee.

5. Michael Franti and Spearhead – September 8

Michael Franti has played at the Les Schwab Amphitheater many times and is happy to return for another year. Franti blends hip-hop with jazz, funk, reggae, folk, and rock to make infectious, danceable music that often contains powerful social messages. As a humanitarian, Franti believes in using his music as a force of change, but as a performer, Franti is committed to putting on a dynamic, entertaining, and uplifting live show.
